Project Management Foundations I
This PMI approved course uses lectures and exercises to provide core knowledge of the practical application of project definition and planning processes. Concepts, processes and tools taught in this course are focused on the effective launch of a project, defining the project scope, creating the project management plan, and developing a well-organized Work Breakdown Structure (WBS). Participants will be introduced to a set of best practices through the course content, and re-enforced through the completion of exercise based on real-world business scenarios.
Who Should Attend?
The primary goal of this course is to develop more effective and efficient project managers by teaching and re-enforcing a “critical few” set of project management best practices. Therefore this course is appropriate for all levels of project management professionals as well as other business professionals that perform project management functions/roles or that are seeking to become a project management professional.
After completing the course, participants will be able to:
- Recognize key elements and attributes of a Project Charter
- Translate information provided in the Project Charter into the project definition section of the Project Management Plan
- Perform stakeholder analysis that delivers tangible benefits during the project planning process
- Obtain and articulate project related information, expectations, and requirements that are utilized to create the project scope definition of the Project Management Plan
- Understand the appropriate use of constraints and assumptions to assist in the scope definition process
- Identify key project management areas to be defined and documented
- Create an effective Project Management Plan that defines how the project will be managed in the context of the stakeholders, organizational assets, and project requirements
- Use the project scope definition, and additional tools (facilitated WBS session and WBS dictionary), to create a well-organized Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) on paper and in the project management tool
- Understand the benefits and critical components of a well-organized WBS
- Perform decomposition to define work package level detail in the WBS
- Complete initial project set-up activities in the project management tool in a manner that enables efficient project planning processes

Prerequisites
This course assumes some level of familiarity with concepts, processes, and tools presented in the PMBOK. PMP certification is helpful, but not required.
